Connemara & South Mayo
Things to Do in Connemara & Mayo – Unrivalled west coast scenery and mountain trails..
Ireland’s hidden gems lay in the wilderness of Connemara and South Mayo – from mountains, lakes and fast flowing streams to bronze age tombs, famine trails and ruins, and everything in between – it truly is a beautiful part of the world and a must see when traveling the island of Ireland.
Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Gardens sits to the south-west of Delphi, about 35 mins away on the N59 Clifden Road. Kylemore has a long rich history as it was founded in 1920 as a Benedictine Monastery and is now recognised as an iconic visitor attraction all over the world, synonymous with Ireland and the Connemara region.
The Connemara National Park also sits to the south-west of Delphi, about 35 mins away on the N59 Clifden Road. The national park boasts some 2,957 hectares of scenic mountains, expanses of bogs, heaths, grasslands and woodlands – a beautiful place to explore on foot.
Doolough Valley sits to the east of Delphi, about 5 mins away on the R335 Louisburgh Road. Doolough is a secluded area of exploration, doused in spectacular lake scenery, deep mountain ranges and trickling mountain streams. Once said to have been claimed by the High Kings of Connacht, Doolough is rich in both ancient and modern history with its witness to the Great Irish Famine. A Celtic stone cross lies within the hanging valley to commemorate those who fell during the Famine on the famous Doolough trail.
Mweelrea, Connacht’s highest mountain, stands tall at 814 metres (the inspiration to our restaurant name, “The 814”) to the rear of the resort. With the 614m walk and the 200m climb to the top, the panoramic views of Connemara and Mayo are worth their weight in steps. On a clear day, walkers can see as far as The Sheeffry Hills, the Twelve Bens, Killary Fjord, Croagh Patrick and some of Mayo’s finest golden beaches.
